It is a story that runs from the hospital’s foundation in 1852 at a townhouse in Great Ormond Street through enormous advances in science and the bleak years of two world wars, to its current stature as one of the leading centres of childhood medicine in the world. The hospital was the first children’s hospital in the English-speaking world, treating and healing children from the impoverished districts of Victorian London at a time when it was common for children to perish from disease or ill-health.

Some of the greatest writers in English history, from Charles Dickens to JM Barrie, have been pivotal in the hospital’s development – most famously, Barrie’s donation of the proceeds from his book, Peter Pan, has forever associated the hospital with one of literature’s best loved children. Leading-edge treatments of childhood diseases have been pioneered at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and used the world over. And today the hospital has a worldwide reputation for excellence and staying true to its motto, the child, first and always.

A message from the hospital's patron, the Queen, is featured, along with contributions from Gary Lineker, Linford Christie, Amanda Redman, Fiona Phillips, Vernon Kay and Tess Daly, whose personal accounts help bring to light just how many lives Great Ormond Street Hospital has touched.

Proceeds from every book sold will go to benefit Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

I wrote, project managed and did the picture research for the book which is published by Simon & Schuster.
